Hola! My name is Nicole Maher-Whaley. I am currently a 7th grade special education teacher at John Winthrop Middle School in Deep River, Connecticut. In my spare time I love to camp and travel. I am also an amateur fly fisher. I am a history buff and an avid Jeopardy viewer. Some goals I would like to reach towards in this course are innovative ways integrate technology into classrooms to help enhance and transform current lessons and traditional activities I currently use.

Explain the differences between wikis, blogs, and web-based word processors. Briefly describe one classroom activity for each tool.

Wikis, blogs, and online word processors are all dynamic and useful technological tools that can be accessed through the Internet.  Wikis, blogs, and online word processors share some similar characteristics, but also  have qualities unique to themselves.  A wiki is a personal web page that can be quickly and easily updated by its creator.  A wiki page is one way an individual can easily share information.  A blog is a website or page that shares new pieces of information quickly and frequently. An online word processor is a place where individuals can type and save documents via the Internet.  Individuals can also share documents with others to make collaboration successful and easy.

How to implement into the classroom environment:

Blog-  Online blogging can take the place from the traditional round table discussion or journal entry within a literature of language arts classroom.  Teachers can post an open ended questions or individual journal prompts onto a classroom blog and students can independently respond.  Teachers can encourage students to express their own thoughts and ideas.  Additionally, students should be expected to comment/respond to a classmates post.  Students should be given choices such as: asking a question for clarification, cordially disagree and explain why, make a connection, etc.

Wiki-  One great way to use a Wikispace is as a means of communication for your students and parents.  This year I have piloting using a wiki page for my classes/students.  On my wiki page I post nightly assignments and due dates for long term assignments.  In addition, I also post useful links students/parents can visit to reinforce concepts taught in class or practice skills they are currently working on.  Another way I use my wiki page is I upload class assignments and worksheets so I can accommodate those students who prefer to type or find handwriting labor intensive.

Online word processor-  One way online word processors can be used in a classroom can be during collaborative projects.  Online word processors make group work easier and more effective.  Students can collaborate in real time and not any one student will be stuck doing the majority of the work on the computer.

  1. I think it would be great to use a blog for students to have an online literature circle with students from another school. Allowing for students to be able to share their ideas with people from different areas of the state or world could really enhance their understanding. I also think it's a great way for students who may not like speaking in front of their peers to share their thinking!
